I want to buy a good DSLR camera. the Canon EOS Rebel XS Digital SLR Camera is the cheapest cannon I could find at $600. Is it a good buy? or should I wait to save up more money and buy a more expensive one?
I'm going to be taking a photography course soon and I hope I can get into professional photography afterwards. A DSLR isn't necessary for the course so I can wait if I should.
If you want to stay with canon i would either get that one and buy more lenses or flashes. Or i would go up to canon rebel XSi
I agree if you dont care about brand i would go to nikon d40 great entry level i use it because its so light.
I had the software on my windows laptop which crashed. I want to install the program so that I can transfer files from the camera to my mac yet I haven’t found where I can download this software at.
If you have a Macintosh with OS X you should already have iPhoto on it. iPhoto should start automatically as soon as you plug the camera into it (via the usb cord that should’ve come with your camera) if it doesn’t, start it and it will automatically recognize the camera and ask if you want to import the photos.
Additionally, you should be able to do it without any software. Plug the camera into the Mac, and a little removable drive icon will appear on your desktop. Double click it to open it and your pictures will be in there. Drag and drop them onto your hard drive in the folder where you want them.
My Mac has recognized every camera I’ve plugged in without any extra software, from Sony, Pentax, to Cannon.
Is cannon going to release another newer camera to replace this one which will lower the price? If not, should I buy it before Christmas or after?
Usually canon makes their new camera and lens announcements in the months leading up to an important tradeshow, the PMA. The next PMA will be in February 2008.

Canon had already made their new camera announcements a few months ago in August, the new cameras they announced was the Canon 40D, and the Canon 1Ds Mark III. There had been no word on a successor to the XTi just yet.
If you want to buy a camera, one of the best times to buy it is in the fall when Canon offers their double/triples rebates for those who buy camera and lenses. Unfortunately, this years rebates didn’t seem too generous as in years past. usually you get a rebate if you buy one canon camera item. when you buyanother canon item, the rebate amount for each item now doubles. when you buy three items, the rebate amount for each item triples.
The only current rebate/coupon right now listed on their website is one for lenses. save up to $125 on selected lenses. expires Jan 13, 2008.

you can alternatively wait until spring 2008—when canon offers their spring rebates—to see what’s up, but don’t expect much. it’s the fall rebates that are usually better.
note: all the listed links below go to authorized canon dealers.

Tele-converters are an inexpensive way of doubling the focal length of a lens, with a 2x converter a 50mm lens becomes a 100mm lens and so on. The problem seems to be with Zoom lenses the loss of light caused by the tele-converter (which may be up to 2 stops with a 2x converter) seems to stop slower lenses from auto-focusing. With a Tamron 2x EF tele-converter all my zoom lenses would only autofocus at their most wide angle settings, only my fast prime lenses which are both f1.8 auto-focused quickly and with no problems at all.
