Nikon d40 or Canon EOS digital rebel XT?

Wednesday Nov 19, 2008

please give me your opinion as I am new at the DSLR

I have the D40 and I really like it. Between those models, I’d suggest the D40. However, Canon has a new model out now, called the XS.

It has much more features than either of those, including live view, which lets you see the picture you’re taking on the screen (like a compact camera).

I have a nikon D40x and love it. It has the same 10.1 megapixel chip that it’s more expensive cousins have but in a small frame. The best resource for me to learn about digital dslr’s was Phil Greenspun’s photography site noted below. Both camera’s are great. The only thing that I wish I had thought of on the Nikon D40X body was that it does not have a motor to autofocus. It relies on the lens having a motor. This is important if you own any old Nikon lenses. They will work but you will have to manually focus.

I would also try to see if you can rent the camera of choice so that you can get a feel for the weight, menu navigation and features.

I’m new at DSLRs too. I posted a question here at Yahoo! Answers a month back to ask which brand/model of camera should I buy. Many people suggested that I buy a Nikon. Before I bought my camera, I checked out http://www.dpreview.com. Nikon D40 was one of the models which got a good review. I bought a D60, though, because I needed the dust reduction system built in it.
