I have the D40 and I really like it. Between those models, I'd suggest the D40. However, Canon has a new model out now, called the XS.
http://www.amazon.com/Canon-10-1MP-Digital-18-55mm-3-5-5-6/dp/B001CBKJGG

It has much more features than either of those, including live view, which lets you see the picture you're taking on the screen (like a compact camera).
References :
Me.

I'm new at DSLRs too. I posted a question here at Yahoo! Answers a month back to ask which brand/model of camera should I buy. Many people suggested that I buy a Nikon. Before I bought my camera, I checked out www.dpreview.com. Nikon D40 was one of the models which got a good review. I bought a D60, though, because I needed the dust reduction system built in it.
References :
I have a nikon D40x and love it. It has the same 10.1 megapixel chip that it's more expensive cousins have but in a small frame. The best resource for me to learn about digital dslr's was Phil Greenspun's photography site noted below. Both camera's are great. The only thing that I wish I had thought of on the Nikon D40X body was that it does not have a motor to autofocus. It relies on the lens having a motor. This is important if you own any old Nikon lenses. They will work but you will have to manually focus.

I would also try to see if you can rent the camera of choice so that you can get a feel for the weight, menu navigation and features.
References :
http://photo.net/equipment/nikon/D40
