A lot of what you need to ask is what effect are you looking for in the picture. Less than 1/500 is like to make a baseball a white blur. The Canon Rebel line will give you should give you an adequate range to do what you want to do. Your camera may already be programmed for sports/action which will do the thing you are asking for. Commonly on full automatic, there are icons to guide. A face means portrait. A Flower means macro/close up photography Mountains symbolize wide angle/telephoto.
