The best upgrade …
The best upgrade from the two bit kit lens is the canon 50mm f/1.8 , because it’s a prime lens and it’s about 6 times brighter. And if you want a telephoto buy a Sigma

f/3.5-5.6 means …
f/3.5-5.6 means that on the widest angle of the lens ie. 18mm the aperture can be widest 3.5, but when increased to its max zoom of 55mm the aperture can go no smaller than 5.6

Hey there, Gordon. …
Hey there, Gordon. I like to think of you as generally impartial to brands when it comes to cameras and photo gear. You do have THE best video tutorials out there. However, I am puzzled as to why you don’t present some third-party lenses in your videos. For example, the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 is a GREAT substitute for the kit lens mentioned here.

It refers to zoom lenses, where the maximum f-number varies as you zoom. The first number is the maximum aperture when zoomed-out and the second is when zoomed-in. See the lens guide at cameralabs . com for an explanation/

COULD SOMEONE WHO’S BEEN USING 17-85mm LENS TELL ME HOW DOES IT FEEL? Tests on the web site show that sometimes 17-85mm performs not better than a kit lens…

Lenses that have a …
Lenses that have a huge range like that generally arent as sharp as one with shorter range. Most say prime lenses are the best, and most sharp lenses you can buy. Glass is as important as the body, why ruin a 50d with a cheap Sigma 18-200mm lens? I suggest a Tamron 28-75mm which many will argue it is as sharp as L glass or any Zeiss lens.

Actually it doesn’t …
Actually it doesn’t have much distortion and you’d have to have very good eyes to be able to tell! Distortion very small, but like all zoom lenses you’ll get more the longer the focal length. I have had this lens for over year now and I’m very happy with it.

You could try the Sigma 18-200mm IS lens. I have this for my 50D and it works really well. Canon also do an 18 – 200mm image stabilized lens.

Bought the canon 50D, body only because the 17-85 kit lens didn’t have much appeal for me. Want an all round lens like the Nikkor 18-200mm to save on changing lenses all the time. Any advise on what canon lens i should invest in. Cheers
