We've had our EOS Digital Rebel XT for about a week now. We bought it with the 18-55mm zoom lens, the 100-300 zoom lens, snd a 1Gig CF card. The camera is replacing our 35mm Canon AE1 which has given 30 years of trouble free service. We just wanted to upgrade to a higher end digital camera.

We use the camera for general use, landscapes, pictures of kids sports, wildlife pictures and so on. Important features to me were taking the picture as soon as the button is pushed and ability to use a relatively long lens. Soccer and basketball are fast games.

I previously owned a Canon A20 digital and was perfectly happy with it except for the lag between pushing the button and taking the picture and the limits of a 3X optical zoom lens.

Things I like.

The auto focus works very fast and starts working as soon as the button is pushed half way. When the button is pushed all the way, the picture is taken right now.

I like the way the camera fits in my hand and the general ergonomics of the basic controls.

I like that it can be set for auto, shutter priority, or arpiture priority, along with some pre set conditions like sports that uses a fast shutter speed, high "ASA" setting, and fires off a burst of 2-4 pictures if you hold the button down.

The lenses are so much lighter than the old ones for my AE1. Even the 100-300 mm weighs about half of the similar lens on my AE1 and is much shorter.

Things I don't like.

I don't like that the camera uses a propriatary rechargable battery. Some times a plug is not available for a battery charger and it would be nice to back up the rechargables with AA cells like my A20. I also wish the batteries could be more standardized, using the same one for this camera and my Canon camcorder. The voltages are the same but the batteries are different sizes.

The myriad of buttons on the back of the camera is something I will have to learn to use. They are quite complex and overpowering at first. It is not necessary to learn them to take good pictures.

The LCD display on the back is not backlit for low light situations, or at least I haven't found the switch to turn it on yet.

I would like a leather case similar to what is on my AE1 (snap open and the front and top of the camera are exposed.) I haven't seen any available as accessories yet.

All in all, we are very happy with the camera and would encourage anyone to consider it for a high end personal camera.
Pro : Fits well, takes excellent pictures, fast shutter response, may never buy a roll of film again.
Con : Propriatary Battery
