Canon Rebel XT lens question?
Posted by admin | Under Canon Rebel XT Lens Sunday Mar 7, 2010I am interested in purchasing a Rebel XT (8 mp). I keep reading that the body is excellent but the lens in the kit is less than stellar and a different lens should be bought separately. I started looking around a bit for alternative lenses (everyday lenses, not telephoto) and were a bit shocked at the sticker prices. Are there any affordable ($100-$250) lenses that are a noticible step up from the lens supplied in the kit? Thanks!!!
Not really. The lens kits is great for the price, just not compared to other $600+ lenses. The lens kit is a decent lens but if you want quality spend at least $500+ on a lens. But of course theres decent lenses under $500, just not as good as Canons L lenses. The lens kit is a decent lens, you can do wonderful stuff with it but if you dont need speed, (f/2.8) then the lens kit is great for generaic, everyday lens.

One of our devoted Canon users recommended the EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM (28-135 equiv.) ($500) as a good "walk around" lens.

I see that B&H Photo (available through Yahoo! Shopping) has this lens bundled with the Rebel XT for $999.95. Okay, okay, it’s $400 more than the 18-55 lens, but it’s a nice lens.
Actually, if the 18-55 lens has the Roman numeral II on it (2), it is not so bad. Canon improved the kit lens after so many trashed it in reviews.

There is a Canon EF at Wal Mart for $170 that is the rough eqivalent of 120 to 450 (it’s the 80-300 f/4)
The lens that comes with the kit is not bad. It’s far better in quality than any other digital camera lens and covers the same basic zoom range as the atypical digital camera 38-115
