you need to have a shutter release cable and a stable tripod and set your shutter speed to "bulb"(Bulb- you can open the shutter as long as you like)
but, 45 mins of open shutter ?? doesn't seems so rational to me. your picture will turn washed out even if you have the biggest f number and lowest ISO at a very dark place.
Not possibel. Why wopuld you want to do something like that.

That's one of the drawbacks to digital imaging: there's no provision of a "Bulb" or indefinite open-shutter condition, as the possibility exists to damage the imaging chip.
Best bet: find an old Pentax or mechanical SLR (I have a old Nikkormat) for your long exposure experiments.
Next best is combine a montage of photos with 25-sec exposures into one using Photoshop.

The Canon XTi does have a bulb mode. The bulb mode will allow you to open the shutter for an indefinite amount of time. You need to switch your shutter speed beyond the 30 secs to get to this mode.
You also need to buy a wireless remote control or a cable release. I am pretty sure they are available for your camera just do a search for it. The idea is that these devices will allow you to keep the shutter open and not have to touch the camera which introduces blurriness when taking long exposures. Also when taking long exposures set your ISO to a small value like 100. This will prevent noise from showing up in your pictures. You should also do noise reduction on the final image.
