I have a Canon Rebel XT camera. Some photos (Jpegs) only take up about 1.2MB while others take up 6MP. Why is there variation when the same camera/lens is taken for each photo? Also, Canon XT is an 8mp Camera. Shouldn’t each photo be 8mp? Thanks!!!
PS: Photoshop tends to increase the memory of a photo. Why is that?
First off, megapixels aren’t the size of a photo. It’s what makes up the photo. You are thinking of megabytes, which would be the size of a photo and how much room it takes up on your memory card.
Yes, more megapixels usually means more detail and a larger size, but that’s not always true. And depending upond your settings (Fine, Normal, etc) can change the size and quality of your photo. Also, EXIF data is enclosed with each photo you take, and not every photo has the same details. Every picture is going to be a different size. Just depends on the quality, etc.

Right now im looking at the2 Canon Digital Rebel XT 8mp SLR w/ ef-s 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 lens.Any advise on if this camera is good for animals and landscape??, i also, dont want to auto focus, id rather do it myself. If not this camera , any suggestions,,, i prefer Canon though, (easier controls), ,,,,,,new to Photography,,,help please
The XT is a great camera, you wont regret it. I know you mentioned that you would like to stick with Canon but I would recommend at least taking 15 minutes to look over the Nikon D40x. For only a little more you get a lot more in the camera. A few extra controls for your animals and landscapes. To be honest, I have used both canon and Nikon and in my opinion Nikon has the easier controls, especially the D40x. Everything can easily be changed because almost all the settings are on one screen so there is no digging through menu’s for those more advanced features. Either way you decide to go you wont regret it. Good Luck and have fun with whichever you choose.
Heres a few sites for the D40x

I have a canon rebel XT, 8mp, my first DSLR. silver with 18-55mm kit lens, it’s in PERFECT condition with box. Not a scratch anywhere on it.
I want an xsi.
How much is it worth?
Your camera is only worth what anybody will pay for it! My best advice would be to put it on Ebay. These cameras can be bought for between £200 and £250 brand new from dealers so you could put it on Ebay with a reserve of whatever you think is fair. Don’t forget, there are a lot of cameras out there around this price, and some are better specified so you have to be realistic in what you ask for it.
Also, you could try a reputable camera shop and see what they would offer you in part exchange against the model you want, but don’t expect too much in this day and age.
Would I benefit more from the larger MP of the Canon or the supposed "sharper sensor" of the Nikon? I will rarely if ever print the images out so detail on screen and overall clarity is what would be more important int he long run.
In my opinion, the D40x is currently the best SLR in the price range you are searching. It is 10.2 megapixels, very small by SLR standards, and has all of the great features Nikons are known for.
But, before making your final choice, keep this in mind: Whichever brand you choose the first time, you will almost certainly be forced into choosing from now on. The reason for this is because the lens’s will only be compatible with the same brand. Because of that, I recommend you spend more time researching the lens than you do the camera body; afterall, the body will get replaced in a few years while the lens’s go on and on.
However, both Canon and Nikon offer a huge variety of excellent optics, so you can’t really make a bad decision.
