Looking for a cost sensible, quality zoom lens for canon Rebel XT?

I am considering the Canon EF28-135 lens, costly in my opinion at about $350 plus. I’m not well versed in lens options for the XT, would appreciate input…..looking for an image stabilizer capable lens that would give me the eqivalent to 6-9X zoom. Canon, non -OEM, doesnt matter as long as it’s a quality optics (if not Canon). Maybe I need to spend the $$ and get a Canon lens as I cited in the beginning. Thnx in advance

You neglected to tell us what lenses you have already … that is the critical factor that will determine which lens you want to buy … that and the subjects you shoot.

Forget everything about the "X" factor … that is a P&S shoot thing, since you cannot change the lens on them. Your XT is a DSLR, so the fact that the amazing 10-22 mm wide angle lens is not much more that a 2x lens means nothing. It is the perfect lens for landscape and architectural photography as well as forced perspective shots.

If Canon made a 18-200 mm like Nikon, the fact that it is an 11x zoom, does not make it a better lens … it is the focal range, 18-200 mm that makes it a good lens as well as the fact it incorporates internal VR

You will be replacing your camera body every three to four years, but your Canon Lenses will last for over 4 decades if you don’t drop them.

IS refers to Image Stabilzation build into the lens, and USM refers to Ultrasonic Motor drive that makes focusing faster than older systems. Currently I’m using a Rebel XT, although I’m thinking of upgrading to an XTi or 5DMk2. This 500 with the New 5D would be a sweet combination.

Taken with my new Canon EF-S Telephoto zoom lens 55 mm – 250 mm F/4.0-5.6. I took a trip to the LA ZOO and just had to say I love this lens!
I was able to get close up at such a far distance. Very happy with my new lens!

What is the best lens for a canon rebel xt slr for taking pictures at a inside event?

The 50 mm f 1.8 is a good suggestion.

Are you allowed to use flash? Will this be something you need to do discreetly? How much is your budget for this lens.

The EF-S 17-55 f 2.8 is "fast" enough to be used indoor without flash. It’s not so ‘long’ on the end (55 mm) however. If you need more "pull" power, the 24-70 mm f 2.8 is very usable.

What is best lens for photographing sports? Have a Canon Rebel xt with 75-300, 80-200mm lens..?

I have a digital Canon Rebel XT, efs18-55mm lens, 35-80mm lens, 80-200mm and a 75-300mm lens.

I take pictures of my sons midget football team and also college football,

I have been looking at tube extensions and close up lenses to get some better shots.

Any suggestions of what I could add to any of these??

What you already have should be sufficient for the application you have. A cheap solution if you need to get closer is to buy a teleconverter possible a 1.4x or a 2x. That will increase your focal length and get you a lot closer.

If you’re really serious about this kind of thing however, you’re also into big bucks. The true sports photographers use dedicated telephotos (600mm to 1000mm) that are also fast lenses (f2.8 usually). The problem is that those are hellishly expensive, costing several times what your camera cost. Which focal lengh you choose depends on how far away the action usually is from you. The farther away, the longer the telephoto you need. You can save money by buying a slower lens (f5.6 or so) but that then gets you into exposure problems often forcing you to use very slow shutter speeds that result in a blurry image.

As to close up lenses and extension tubes, those are not for sports, they’re for close up or macro photography. They allow you to get nearer your subject so that you can get a larger image. If you’re interested in that too, I’d prefer the extension tubes. The problem with them is that you lose considerable light however in return you get crisp wonderful images. Close up lenses are cheaper but wil not get you a sharp image.
