I am looking for my first digital slr. I would like to do some photography as a hobby.
All three are solid camera that will grow with your skills. I’m a Nikon fan, but my brother shoots with a Canon Rebel XTi, so we argue alot.
The Pentax has nice features at a good price, but it doesn’t have the support from other lens makers that you’ll find for Nikon & Canon cameras.
One of the reasons I like Nikon is the handling. Very consistant design and controls in bodies that feel right in my hands. Notice I said, "in my hands", because you need to make your own decision.
Here’s some reviews for help you.

My photography started as a hobby and just grew. Remember, the camera is just a tool. I don’t think I could do too much with Leonardo DaVinci’s paintbrush!
Just remember, a DSLR is a camera that will grow with you, as your skills and interests grow.
I hope this helps.
By the way, the photos in the link below were shot with the model before the Nikon D40. I used an older D50 and an outdated Nikon 75-300mm lens from the 56th row across the stadium, then cropped and resized the photos before uploading. With the newer equipment and lenses, I think one could do as well or better.

Which has the edge?
The one that sits in your hands better!
As they say – the beauty is in the eye of the beholder….
Same here. These are two great cameras, but one may feel better in your hands, be more intuitive to you or has just that little feature that you and only you will value the most.
Both are great cameras. Hard to call an absolute winner.
Canon vs Nikon war is almost as old as the two camera makers. You will hear (both here and in real life) lots of advices from users of either brand, that it is the one they have that you should get! I, for one, use one of these brands (I deliberately won’t say which), and think that it is the brand to get… Though, it’s my personal biased opinion….
But it will be YOU, you will use the camera in the end, so it should be YOU who decides and gets camera that’s best for YOU, not THEM.
Here’s a good starting place:
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/
Read the reviews of both cameras. See the features and pros and cons and read all little details, then ask yourself – does one stand out?
Then go to a local camera store. Don’t skip this step. Handle both cameras, mess with them, take a few shots, scout through the menus and settings, etc. One may just feel better in your hands than the other.
Then you’ll know what is YOUR preference.
LEM.
Hi,
I am planning to buy my first SLR. I am wondering whether to buy a used Canon Rebel XT with 18-55mm lens for $300 or a new Rebel XS for $500 (also with 18-55 lens). What do the experts think is a better deal? I don’t really want to spend a lot on this.
The XT is a very good starter camera, If you’re not planning to go super professional anytime soon, it’s good for a first-timer.
Yes, the XS is a little quicker with the autofocus and a little more stable, but honestly, it’s not THAT much of a difference.
I would go with the XT for $300.
Hope you like it! Whichever one you end up buying!
